I don’t think so. If I recall correctly, there aren’t any significant grades between LA and Vegas, so you should be fine. I’ll be curious to see your review of it under those conditions (the heat mostly).

@BOBBLEHEADGURU. Kind of misleading. The Fed Tax Incentive is paid when you file your taxes. You also pay state and registration taxes on the ‘value’ of the car. So while you may get a larger tax refund, you still gotta find a way to up front pay effectively up to $50k for the Volt at time of purchase (assuming $45k MSRP which some models are…).

The car starts at $31,645 MSRP after Federal Tax Incentive.

If you subtract off the $7600 fuel savings over 5 years (a very conservative $127/month) v. an average car (as detailed on its window sticker), it has an effective price of $24,045.

My understanding is that Colorado has an additional $6000 tax credit which brings its effective price down to $18,045 or 60% LESS than the price of $45K that you mentioned.

The real question is whether you would seriously consider this car at $18K?

And I’d wager the creature comforts in the Lexus would be much nicer. I get that this is new technology and all that, but it feels like they are being priced so people don’t buy them.

So basically you can spend $45k on a Volt or go spend the same amount of money on a Lexus RX 450h. If you do ‘real’ driving (like you did), you’ll get approximately the same mpg (source: Edmunds.com with empty battery was getting 33 mpg, same site shows 32/28 mpg for Lexus).
