Best Western Denver SW (by Chester Bullock)

I do product photography, and I do real estate photography. But when it comes to shooting hotels and resorts, it’s a mix of both.

The manager of the Best Western Denver SW (located in Lakewood, Colorado despite the name), saw my photos recently and liked my work. They are in the middle of a website redesign and needed new photos of the property since they have completed renovations recently. I went down one recent afternoon and took care of the shoot. By the end of the weekend I had presented him with the images I thought were keepers. He was extremely pleased and they should be showing up on the website after the new one is launched. And I’ll be going back for exterior shots once things green up here in Colorado.

Contact me today if you have photographic needs in real estate, products or portraits.

Gone Skiing

Union Meadows at Copper Mountain

Today is a holiday at the company I work for, so I am going skiing. Not sure if Copper Mountain has enough snow yet to ski the part of the mountain in the picture, but I hope so. I worked at Copper for 2 years, and pride myself in being able to find all the powder stashes. But it has to snow for that to happen.

Canvas Wraps

Sunlight Mountain Resort
I was waiting to write today until the canvas wraps I ordered from Canvas On Demand had arrived. I have always wanted to do a canvas wrap of a picture, but never really knew which one to do.

Union Meadows at CopperAs it turns out, we are decorating one room of our house in a ski theme, and the two pictures here seemed perfect for it. So last week I sent the pics off to Canvas On Demand and waited anxiously. Once I got the shipping notice on Tuesday, I knew they would arrive today.

They come packed very well so nothing gets damaged in transit. Standard shipping is via FedEx ground, but you can pay more to expedite it. The quality of these images is superb. After having these two made, you can be sure I will be doing more. Maybe some small 8×10’s of my flower macros. I could even add a water-color treatment in Photoshop first before I send the file in. I’ll bet those would look really sharp. I am glad I bit the bullet and did this. You should try it too!

Union Meadows at Copper Mountain Resort
This week we are a little more in tune with the season. It is winter here in Colorado, and I present you with one of my favorite winter images.

I used to work at Copper Mountain Resort in Colorado when I was fresh out of college. I worked there for two seasons. The first was all about quantity of skiing – I registered 75 days. The second season was more about quality – I only notched 55. But most were powder days of some sort.

The fun thing about working at a ski resort is that you learn it so well. I can still find untracked powder up to about 2pm on a powder day at Copper. Sometimes you have to work to get it, but it is so worth it when you do. Union Meadows, where this was shot, is not one of those places. Just traverse to the skiers left from the top of S lift and you will find this treasure trove of narrow, powder filled runs.

And after you have carved up some powder, order this print to remind you of what awaits you the next time you hit the slopes.

Quiet snowy ski trail at Sunlight Mountain Resort in Colorado.
This is one of my all time favorite images, as it conveys how peaceful it was on the snow that day. Skiing, for me, is the ultimate way to make peace with the world. When I am out there, it is just me and the mountain, and I can push myself as hard as I like, or take it as easy as I want to. If I want, I can just lay down on the hill and stare at the sky for a while. Almost like meditation.

And this feeling doesn’t just come when I am skiing by myself. I ski with people of varying abilities all the time. If I am out with a beginner or intermediate, they always worry that they are keeping me from enjoying the mountain. That fear could not be any further from the truth. I am just happy to be there, and happy to share the mountain with my friends and family. With this photo, I hope to share some of that peace with you too. This photo is also available as one of the options for my Colorado-style notecard / holiday greeting card offering for 2008. Order your print today. The “Shingles” Are Out

Lakewood High School Cheerleaders 2008-09
Last week I said that I felt like I was ready to start offering my services. Today I am announcing that I am officially in business. I am now offering my services for both portrait (senior pictures, group events, family portraits and corporate headshots) photography as well as real estate photography.

Why both?

Well, because I like both. And I have time for both, at least right now while my business is new. I decided to pursue portraits because of two things:
1) Megan’s Senior Pictures for Lakewood High School came out so well.
2) One of Megan’s cheerleading friends told me, in no uncertain terms, that she wants me to do her Senior Pictures when it’s her time. That made me feel pretty confident about what I am doing, and confidence is often the last hurdle when undertaking a new endeavor.

I also decided to pursue the real estate photography business because I think I have an eye for it. I know what sold me on my house, and I think I can help a realtor project the image of a house that will speak to people. With how badly the credit market is tightening up, I think it will be more important than ever to have the highest quality imagery for a property that is for sale.

I am not limiting it to real estate for sale though. I also intend to do resort and hotel photography too. Based on the photos I have taken at the Westin Kierland Resort and the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek, I want to offer my services to those types of properties as well.

I have added pages to this site outlining my portrait services as well as my resort/ real estate photography services. You will find sample portfolios for each service. If you are interested in either, please contact me so we can get some dates on the calendar.

Park Hyatt, Beaver Creek, Colorado
Seems like forever ago that I decided I wanted to start shooting real estate for a part time income. Ever since, I have been doing my homework – reading the relevant sites, starting to engage in Flickr group conversations, ordered and read an ebook. Beyond all that, I have been doing a lot of practicing. I have gone back to images from a few months ago and reworked them in Photoshop, taking advantage of lessons learned in the ebook and the Flickr groups (I can’t say enough good things about the people in the PFRE Flickr group – they have been very helpful and nice to boot). I took the best of the crop and created my Real Estate / Resort Photo Gallery.

This gallery represents the first step in me deciding that it is time to actively market my services for real estate photography in the Denver metro area (probably focusing on Denver, Lakewood, Littleton, Wheat Ridge, Golden) and the Colorado Front Range (to include Bailey, Conifer/ Aspen Park, Evergreen, Morrison, Kittredge, Genesee, the 285 and I-70 corridors). I never mind a trip to the mountains, so I plan to also be available in the Summit County area, covering Keystone, Dillon, Silverthorne (and Wildernest), Frisco, Breckenridge and Copper Mountain.

I have not finalized pricing yet, but plan to do that soon based on similar services in the area. Yes, times are tough right now in real estate, but I think quality photos can really help generate interest in a property. When the economy is down, effective marketing is that much more essential.

Take a look at my Real Estate / Resort Photo Gallery and let me know what you think.

Sometimes I get to see cool stuff

Red Lego Volvo XC90
I am lucky in that my travels sometimes take me to some very cool places and I get to see or do things I have never done before. Such was the case at the recent Governor’s 2008 Colorado Tourism Conference in Beaver Creek, Colorado. Besides being in the mountains for all of the great fall colors, I came across this car near the ice rink in the main plaza at Bachelor Gulch.

It is a Volvo XC90 that has been completely covered in Lego. I tried searching for it on Google to learn more (there were no placards or anything else to explain why it was there), but all I came up with were references to a blue one. As you can quite clearly see, this is not the blue one that kept coming up in my Google searches.

Here are more photos of the red Lego Volvo. And in case you were wondering, yes, it is a real car underneath – I got down on the ground to take a look.

Room Interior, Westin Kierland Resort, Scottsdale, AZ A few weeks ago, Microsoft Photosynth hit the Net. A few of the blogs I follow talked about it, and it looked interesting. I had some time during my conference in Phoenix, so I made a “synth” of my room at the Westin Kierland Resort in Scottsdale, AZ. I downloaded the PDF synth guide with instructions for making a new synth, and set about shooting the room. I wound up with 78 photos.

I shot them in RAW, so I exported them from Lightroom 2 and then started the upload process. This is where my frustration started. It took over 4 hours to upload those pictures. Luckily I had other things to do, like go to the pool and then a dinner engagement, so I left to do that.

When I came back after dinner, the little green box said it was done, and that my photos were “58% synthy”. Whatever that means. I proceeded to load the synth, and was not pleased with the results. For whatever reason, I had expected this to work like other synths I had seen, that acted like a virtual walk-through. I took pictures of the room, the balcony, and the bathroom. I took “approach” photos that I thought my be what synth needed to construct the next scene in the walkthrough. It didn’t do any of this.

You are probably asking why I did all this, and expected a result other than what I achieved. Fair enough. It’s because the PDF instruction set didn’t have specific directions for how to do this. In the absence of those directions, I made an assumption. I wonder how many other people are experiencing this.

Oh well. I don’t really see an application for this anyway. You have to download software to even view these things. When you consider that Flash is on 99% of computers out there, it makes more sense to do virtual tour types of things in Flash than this thing. It’s a solution without a problem.

Apparently, someone I really respect agrees it isn’t ready for widespread usage.

Courtyard, Westin Kierland Resort, Scottsdale, AZ
This image probably doesn’t seem too remarkable, but it represents a first for me. It’s the first time I have done a photo in “bulb” mode. I was trying to get photos of the lightning storm that passed through last night. It was too far away, and none of the bolts looked good in the shots. So I went with my immediate surroundings. Sometimes a shoot doesn’t work out the way you wanted. You just need to roll with it and see if you can get something salvageable. In this case, I got practice, which is worth a lot to me… PP in Lightroom, of course.
